Dear Copyright Holder,

We are GCSE students writing with the intention of receiving your permission to use Gary Jules' cover of Mad World for our music video.

Given your permission, this song would be used in our current GCSE Media Studies project, which involves creating a music video for a popular music track. We feel that Mad World would be a great song to create a video for.

If we received your permission, this track would only be used in an educational context and viewed by our media class, the teacher and the OCR exam board moderator. The video would NOT be released to a target audience.

Gary Jules and your company would be fully recognised throughout preproduction and the final video itself. A copyright notice with wording supplied by you can be included in the records of the project. If indeed this is required, please send full details.

This is an in depth character profile of someone who has all the characterstics of our typical viewer. These characteristics have been exaggerated for the sake of your understanding. We understand that each viewer will have different stories and characteristics.

Ethan Johnson - 18 Y/O

He was born in Miami, Florida in 1996 and has an older brother who is 21. Ethan has lived in the same 3 storey house since birth. His family has a middle class income, his Father is a biophysicist and his mother an elementary school teacher. When he was 12 his parents divorced so he lived with just his dad and brother, because if this he spent a lot of time with his father who began to talk with him seriously about relationships and the opposite sex for the first time, as well as the problems between Ethan's mother and himself. This experience made Ethan less sensitive to every day problems, which lost him several peers. Ethan became colder with every passing day and only focused on the serious problems of life.

Throughout his school years Ethan has been known as the smart, nice guy who has a good relationship with everyone around him. Girls don't consider him to be the most attractive of people but his personality along with his intelligence and build has resulted in a couple of girls having a romantic interest in him in the past. When he was 15 he began studying every monday and friday after school with a girl who he had been assigned to work on a science project with over the next two months. As the weeks went by they developed a strong bond and sometimes she would even sleepover on the friday sessions. After a month of working together Ethan, in his mind, had declared himself in love with this girl. Eventually he asked her to be his girlfriend and she said yes, they were together for 3 years until she suddenly broke up with him. He has cried almost every night since then and hates himself for making her break up with him, even though he had been completely selfless and caring throughout the 3 years. This experience forced him into a deep depression that since then, has never gone away.

Ethan has always enjoyed spending time with his family, particularly his brother, whom he confides with on everything. He is average looking and very conscious of this - actually believing himself to be ugly. This in turn resulted in morning routines that would take a little longer than the average male his age, but after the breakup he simply stopped caring. Ethan is respectful and open to all people unless given a good reason not to be and is usually the person who will be tasked with showing new students around the school. Ethan has no patience for liars and people who intentionally try to cause problems, his physical prowess have been a deterring factor to anybody thinking about bullying him, however he has witnessed close friends of him fall victim to bullies in the past and when this has happened, he is always the one to solve the problem. His favourite song is Green Day - 'Boulevard of broken dreams' The song reflects his own feelings of loneliness which is why he relates to it. His favourite genres are rock and alternative rock. He prefers songs that he can directly relate to.

Grinding Down Into Videos

Fall out Boy Miss Missing You Video analysis - Lourenço

This music video definitely uses narrative structure just like every other video in their latest album "Save Rock and Roll" and I really love the way they structured the videos to this album as it does come in parts and it tells a story about how they get kidnapped and later on the lead singer Patrick Stump betrays his friends and kills them because he becomes unstable. Also another point id like to put across is that their video fits in place with the lyrics and it all makes sense.

In this Part of all the videos which is Part (10 of 11) it tells the story of the two remaining band members Patrick Stump and Peter Wents as they are chasing each other and how they eventually end up killing each other at the end; it also uses many different camera angles such as from a Birds eye view and even from the back.

At the beginning of the video you see Almost like a possessed Patrick Stump which your not really used to seeing and he’s trying to go after his real life best mate Pete Wents and obviously this creates a lot of tension and also a lot of sadness because to all the people who know this band they obviously know that this must be very hard for the band and this also makes us feel a lot of sympathy towards the two protagonists because of what’s happening in the scene.

I also chose this video because not only the lyrics tell a sad story but both the video and the beat of the song is very catchy which will instantly attract an audience. Later on in the video after Patrick Stump and Pete Wents have a brawl Patrick follows Pete towards some sort of circle filled with lunatics which yet again shows a front camera view also I like the idea of making people have emotional thoughts which make them continue watching which yet again means we could incorporate this into the video.

The video also uses a lot of interesting props in the video such as a huge machete. The scenery in the video is also quite unique as they have used a sort of abandoned area which looks like a Dump yard as well as an abandoned area with trailer’s.

This video attracts its audience because its definitely what they came to see which is something unique and yet again we could incorporate this into our video and it has some Dramatic scenes and fits in perfectly with the lyrics which is just the icing on the cake and also their costumes in the video sort of fits in with our mise-en-scene.

Black Parade – My Chemical Romance - Shahel

The video starts off with a scene appearing through a circular somewhat, portal. It represents a first person view, as they continue using the method of the circular vision opening and closing like someone is blinking and everything is unclear. All we can see is a patient in an old-school hospital with nurses around him. This provides the image of a scary feel to it, as it is bland and there seems to be tension in the room. The costumes, and set is white, which is in contrary to the song itself, as the songs name is Black Parade. This makes the audience question subconsciously about what is happening.

Next in shot comes Gerard Way, the lead singer of the band performing this song. His face is lit up and he is staring into the sky. He then does a bit of performance. This part you are staring into his face and feel a sense that Gerard is having a Nostalgic moment as he is looking away from the camera and staring into a daydream. This correlates with the lyrics of the song as the lyrics refer to the past: “When I was a Young Boy”. This brings in the audience because it intrigues them about the situation and they attempt to empathise with the singer and see what he is saying and try to imagine what he is.

Next we see this, a dark world so to say. It has shady buildings in the background. A dark and sharp castle, one of those that screams creepy at you. This image is created because of childhood teachings and images where all the castles in children books and shows that were of a dark nature and rigidly shaped. This helps the audience empathise as well because if they are thinking like kids they can correlate with the singer who is reminiscing their childhood.

The next part is back to the patient who is now having a fit and twitching whilst he holds onto the nurse’s hand for support. The lyrics at this points say: “Demons”. This instantly instigates the thought of him being possessed by a demon. Adding to the thought and feel of the chilling atmosphere.

The “Blinking” effect (What I am now going to refer to it as cause it sounds a lot more intellectual than opening/closing circle) is used again and it kind of creates the feel of switching between two parallel universes because before the ‘Blink’ we saw the patient as he was. Then we see him like this, almost demonic. It gives a vibe that the patient has passed away and is going into the underworld.

 

The next shot is back in the “parallel” universe and there is literally a Black Parade, and the band, My Chemical Romance, is on a float. This is where logic starts to kick in as the video now correlates to the songs title: ‘Welcome To The Black Parade’. It fits perfectly in as the walls around the patient falls as if they are curtains and he enters the ‘parallel’ universe. And he enters the ‘Black Parade’

The rest of the video is selective shots of the black parade in action; alternating between the people marching and the band performing. What makes it intriguing is the nature of obscurity in the video and the weirdness because your eyes get glued to the screen as you try to make sense of everything. The video has alternative shots between a narrative and a performance and has a good balance between them. The conventions are that there is a band performing, and there is a link to the lyrics with the performance.

Coldplay ‘Fix you’ music video analysis. - Riaz

The video starts of with him sitting down on the pavement and then a bus passing by.

The location starts off in a tunnel and then he starts to walk through different tunnels, later he starts running through the tunnels and the final location is when he is performing to everyone on stage. This final location is full of people watching him perform is song and are also really loud.

Most of the time Coldplay is looking straight at the camera in a say, which creates a feeling of sympathy from the audience towards Coldplay.  The target audience for the music video is anyone because anyone can be feeling down or sad at times. The song is about anyone who is feeling down or sad and he can fix the people and make them happy. The music video appeals to both genders.

There are some props in the video like a guitar, a piano and etc. There wasn’t that much props because they wanted to build a simple feeling just by singing and showing the emotions of Coldplay.

Towards the end when he is on stage performing it creates a sense of excitement, we can see this in the video when Coldplay is singing and the audience then jumping up and down because of excitement. At the very end of the music video everyone starts to join in singing the last few bits of the song. This shows us that they like the song a lot and are excited.

Panic! at the Disco-This is Gospel music video analysis - Lourenço

This MUSIC VIDEO uses narrative structure and ruing the video it is based on the main singer Brendon Urie and it tells a story about how he is being treated badly and it is sometimes a bit random and this is nothing weird because they normally make videos like this.

In the video This is Gospel Brendon Urie which is the lead singer is in a hospital bed and is trying to escape from the surgery that their going to do on him, This brings some sort of tension and also it makes us have some sympathy towards the protagonist. This video is aimed to Female and Male aged 13-35 and maybe even more because the lyrics actually talk about love and haw some people get treated badly and this is quite popular when making a Sad song.

The video starts with Brendon Urie in a Hospital bed about to get put into surgery but then he suddenly Starts fighting back trying to stop the Doctors from putting him to sleep which attracts the person who's watching it, It later changes to a scene where Brendon Urie is being placed in a suit getting ready to be placed in a coffin which not only does it make you have Sympathy but also makes us ask questions about whats going on and you can tell that he's still fighting back saying "If you love me let me go" which is where the chorus starts.

You can also tell that he is fighting back and he's in a bad place at that moment because of the props and Costume he's using because later on when it creates even more tension he's being placed into a coffin and there trying to burry him alive and their trying to Drown and the Props they used were quite weird such as Ropes and Coffin.

Later in the video when he is getting pulled back by the Ropes creates a lot of silence for the person is watching because you rely don't know whether he is going to survive or not and in the moment where he starts getting pulled back and put back in the hospital bed it creates sadness and also brings some shock which is why a lot of people like this music video.

This video attracts its Audience  because there are many parts of the video that are shocking moments which is quite cool. I also want to do this video because it seems like a really sad but Dramatic video to do.
